Nutella: Always striving for that front page spread

From riots to lipstick: Here's what Nutella did. #WorldNutellaDay

Nutella on the couch

When it comes to Nutella it's safe to say we're the big spoon.

As many sit on the side of infatuation, this jar of choc-hazelnut gold knows no bounds and we admire anyone (or anything) that can simply spread the word by simply, well being. #lifegoals

As World Nutella Day rolls around this Tuesday, 5 February, we decided to salute the spread that keeps our brekkies sweet, our desserts ridiculous and our Food news buzzing - it's never a dull moment under a jar of 'tella, 'tella, tella, eh, eh, eh.

Millions of hazelnut, hazelnut trees

One million hazelnut trees have been planted on a farm in southern NSW. This is in preparation for 2020 (not that far away, people) where thousands of tonnes of hazelnuts are going to be used in the likes of Nutella and Ferrero Rocher, more than likely at the company's factory in Lithgow, NSW. Looks like Australia is cracking it big time on the hazelnut production front while also planning ahead should that zombie apocalypse roll around sooner than anticipated.

Remember that time in France when things got a little... nuts...

Ever wondered what would happen if Nutella went on sale? Last week, a French supermarket put that theory into practice by reducing jars by 70 per cent - from 4.50 euros (AUD$5.60) to just 1.41 euros (AUD$1.75)! The shoppers came, they saw and boy, did they conquer - until they had all the jars, ALL THE JARS. The frenzy was so intense, it was likened to "an orgy" as police were called to the scene and several customers were injured... eep! How far is too far when discounted Nutella is involved?

Nutella's got serious street cred

2016 in Ontario, Canada - a crime gang were busted with $5 million of stolen cars, drugs, firearms and cash, oh and .

2017 in Neustadt, Germany - a group of thieves stole a trailer containing 20 tonnes of Nutella and Kinder Surprise eggs, worth about 50-75,000 euros (AUD$85-125,000).

"Anyone offered large quantities of chocolate via unconventional channels should report it to the police immediately," Neustadt police said in a statement to .

Okay, 2018, where next?

Hold onto your hazelnuts...

They changed their recipe, so #NutellaGate...

Not many foods inspire such fandom, so if it ain't broke why fix it? Ferrero, we're looking at you, as there were to their sugar and milk ratios last November.

While Ferrero was adamant the change was minor, choc-hazelnut snackers revolted.
Even those who didn't have it running through the veins were up in arms! Because Nutella!
Spoonful of sugar

What began as a marketing joke turned into a cafe's menu item (well, kind of).

Satirical Facebook page  posted about a cafe that served up spoonsful of Nutella and PB&J for $5 a pop. Had hipsters gone too far? Was nothing sacred? How about just buy a jar for the same price, people?! These were all valid responses and the social outrage drummed up so much buzz that a happened soon thereafter with the tagline, “Sometimes you just want a taste of things...” And like any good social media event, some were outraged, others were pumped for Nutella sans jar.

There was a bath challenge?

With over 2.5 million views, we still don't know why, but we can't look away. And more importantly, has anyone actually attempted this at home?***

***No we are not asking you to actually do this at home.

But for the most part, just shut up and take our money

Fettu-cella

When it comes to "fusion," Nutella doesn't shy away from a solid collab and chocolate pasta is probably the dessert you never knew you needed. Last October (and for one week only) Melbourne's restaurant dished up carby bowls of chocolate pasta, covered in a Nutella sauce spiked with Frangelico - all the makings of a dessert coma.

Could Oreos get any better?

Chocolate-hazelnut-filled Oreo's have hit the US supermarket shelves and that's not the only flavour coming out of the biscuit works - Pina Colada is due to make a splash in 2018 as well. Lucky we remember the ad - first, you twist it, then you lick it, then you eat another 20 in your room with the door closed, right?
"Boys Taste Better with Nutella"

Boys Taste Better with Nutella explores coming of age, relationships and the folds in time. It won Best Production, Best Script & Best Actor at Short+Sweet Festival. and is a comedy that uses hazelnut spread to explore the best (and worst) moments of relationships.

Presented by the Backyard Theatre Collective, this production is being shown as part of the Fringe World Festival 2019 in Perth. Did we mention you can donate to their crowdfunding campaign? It is currently being funded by Creative Partnerships Australia through MATCH Lab. MATCH Lab is a matched funding program for independent artists and groups. They will support the project by matching the amount raised during the crowdfunding dollar-for-dollar! We're all for storytelling through food, and you've got our attention!
Ah, the burger bonanza

Thank you Italy McDonald's for this piece of magic so far away from SBS Food HQ, we were reprimanded for licking our desktops #fact. Hold the beef patty but keep the bun, this is basically to entice those Nutella on bread fiends out there. Nutella burger, will you be our Valentine?
Another day, another coffee cup

Could this be as big as , coffee cone or the ? We're calling it, yes.

Never fear if you aren't a coffee fiend, hot chocolate lovers can also rejoice as the hollowed-out cinnamon doughnut is lined with Nutella then filled with hot sustenance. We have Kenilworth's Bakery to thank for this keep cup 2.0 - an efficient vessel and perhaps one you wouldn't want to drink (read: spill) at your desks...

They say change is as good as a holiday

It may come as a shock to you, but Ferrero wanted consumers to buy even more Nutella, so in 2017 they teamed up with an Italian marketing agency and created 7 million 'Nutella Unica' jars that were sold throughout Italy. A limited project that encouraged shoppers to put their Nutella on display and get a little playful with these striking designs and it worked as these eye-catching jars sold out within a month, according to .
'tella pout

And we're not talking about the Nutella lippy effect you get from licking your spoon or fingers - we're talking about the cleverly named Nude-tella range from . So where's the Nutella? Apparently, in the sweet smell, so choose your time and place of application wisely. In the meantime, we're all for the jar-to-lip approach, we just find it doesn't stay on for long...
Well, it looks like PB's rival is walking the walk while its fans are talking the talk. And according to the  website, there have already been over 1.5 million Nutella conversations across the globe - okay, whether or not this is legit or not we don't know - one thing's for sure, we know what we'll be doing come Tuesday...
