Syrians come together amid ruins to break Ramadan fast

In the middle of a grey street, surrounded by ruins of buildings and rubble, residents of Douma in Syria sat at tables to break their Ramadan fast with an Iftar feast.

Douma, a rebel-held suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus, has been repeatedly attacked by Syrian government forces with air strikes and barrel bombs over the past for four years.

A mass Iftar - which is the meal when Muslims end their daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan - was held for several hundred residents, who had previously been forced to eat "hidden in mosques, fearing strikes", according to one resident who attended, the reports.

The meal was organised by the Syrian, who will run the nightly celebration during the last 10 days of Ramadan.

"We would have normally been cautious to host such events due to air stirkes, but we are taking advantage of the latest de-escalation deal," an official from the Adaleh Foundation's Turkey bureau told the .
