Channel some of the strength, courage, intelligence, imagination and enthusiasm associated with the Year of the Dragon and dive into the food+travel series with favourite hosts including Luke Nguyen, Victor Liong, Dan Hong, Jimmy Shu, Lauren Camilleri, Khanh Ong, Adam Liaw, Poh Ling Yeow, Nadiya Hussain, Yasmin Newman and Clarissa Wei.

SBS Food will broadcast special Lunar New Year programming weekdays 5pm - 6pm from 5 February to March, while SBS On Demand has a curated as part of a wider that brings together movies, TV series and more.

From discovering Thai cotton candy to roaming Seoul in search of jook and kimbap, here’s a taste of what’s on offer.

Seoul at Home

This four-part series sees Michelin-starred chef and Masterchef Canada host Alvin Leung (sometimes known as the ‘Demon Chef’, though here at least it translates to keen enthusiasm for the food he’s eating and a liking for dark glasses, rather than any fireworks) and local celebrity chef Matthew Chung explore Seoul in search of home-made traditional food, uncovering recipes that have passed through generations and re-creating these dishes in their own styles. The series kicks off with the pair visiting eateries and people’s homes to taste jeon (Korean pancakes). In the episodes that follow, they dive into kimbap (Korean rice rolls), jook (rice porridge) and bibimguksu (cold noodles)

See double episodes of Seoul at Home from 5pm on Monday 5 February and Tuesday 6 February on SBS Food. All four episodes will be available to stream at SBS On Demand from 5 February.

Taiwan Bites

From Taiwan’s 24-hour food culture to the bubble tea that took the world by storm, this eight-part series sees Taiwanese-born and raised, US-based restaurateur travel the world to explore the stories and meaning behind the food he grew up with. His travels in Europe, the US and several parts of Asia see him meeting other chefs who are inspired by the flavours of Taiwan, and exploring Taiwan’s most-loved dishes and traditions, including braised pork rice, beef noodles and bubble tea, Taiwan’s round-the-clock food culture, old and new vegetarian recipes, and the diverse dishes served in a big Taiwanese-style breakfast.

See Taiwan Bites 5pm, weekdays Wednesday 7 February to Friday 16 February. All eight episodes will be available to stream at SBS On Demand from 7 February.

Hidden Gems

This anthology series brings together six engaging food documentaries exploring Thai food. Jok One Table tells of a man named Jok who survives early struggles to establish a successful restaurant with just one table, and how his desire to leave a legacy impacts his relationship with his son. Tales of Trang’s Roasted Pork follows two men who strive to shine a spotlight on their city’s roasted pork tradition. The third documentary, Michelin Cotton Candy, shares the story of Mae Pom, the owner of a popular dessert shop in Ayutthaya, a town known for its pulled cotton candy. Jaii Noodle 1953 shares the story of a father and daughter who have drifted apart but are drawn back together when she decides to take over the family’s noodle restaurant. Midnight Street Chef, a story of love and legacy, follows Uncle Tue, who operates a small street food restaurant in Petchaburi and decides to open a street food spot in front of his house, drawing his daughter home to join him. And finally, in The Last Flame of Bamboo Sticky Rice, we meet Aunt Tid and her sisters, women who are among the last to continue the technique of cooking bamboo sticky rice over a traditional fire.

Eat China

Eat China is a great way to appreciate the breadth and variety of Chinese food. Across 11 episodes, host Clarissa Wei travels around China to explore signature dishes, ingredients and traditions, from Sichuan’s gold thread noodles and Shanghai soup dimplings to Xinjiang’s baked bao and everyday traditions such as chopsticks, wok cooking and bubble tea. Chinese drinks also get their share of attention in two Eat China specials, which look at medicinal wines, baijiu (a clear grain-based spirit), craft beer and Shaoxing rice wine.

Eat China will also air SBS Food weekdays from Friday 1 March to Thursday 14 March (the first episode on 1 March airs at 5pm; the remaining episodes air at 4.30pm). The series is also streaming now at SBS On Demand.
