At least 222 people died when a tsunami hit beaches around Sunda Strait in Indonesia on Saturday night, the government's Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a statement on Sunday.
It said 165 other people had been injured.
According to Indonesian outlet Berita Satu, the agency's Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the tsunami was "possibly caused" by the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano.
Berita Satu said the death toll is likely to grow.
Volcano photographer Oystein Andersen posted on Twitter that he was on the beach observing the Krakatoa after explosions earlier in the evening when the waves came.
"I was at the beach and saw the waves," he wrote. "I ran."
The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa was one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions in the world, killing more than 36,000 people.
