The whole of Europe was looking at France this weekend. The vote, known as the “fate election,” was about the question of whether the right-wing populist Rassemblement National led by Marine Le Pen could also win the majority of votes in the French parliamentary elections after the successes in the European elections. Things turned out differently, but not as France's president might have hoped after his surprising announcement of new elections in June.
