United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned the climate emergency "is a race we are losing" and called for countries to lift their commitments to cut emissions.

Greta's speech

"I shouldn't be up here. I should be back at school on the other side of the ocean," said Greta Thunberg, 16, who has become the global face of a growing youth movement against climate inaction that mobilised millions in a worldwide strike on Friday.

"You come to us young people for hope. How dare you?" she thundered, her voice at times breaking with emotion.

"We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is the money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!"

Australia's stance on climate change

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is holding fast to the pledge former Prime Minister Tony Abbott made for Australia of cutting emissions by 26-28 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030.

At the same time the head of the United Nations calls on countries to do more on climate change.

At the United Nations Climate meeting nearly 70 countries, about two-fifths of those signed up to the Paris Agreement have indicated they will increase climate action.

Mr Morrison did not attend the meeting.

He was represented by Foreign Minister Marise Payne.

Australia went to the meeting with no plan to slash emissions. As such Australia was excluded from the list of speakers.
