Parents who abuse or threaten teachers in Victoria now face being banned from school campuses. Legislation is to be debated in the state parliament, as high numbers of teachers say they feel unsafe in their workplace.

Highlights

  • Victorian education minister James Merlino is introducing a bill designed to stop this from happening.
  • It’s a key recommendation from the 2018 Protective Schools Ministerial Taskforce.
  • Under the plan, parents or carers who show aggression - physical, verbal or online - towards school staff can be issued with a community safety order.
