According to a report by Committee for Economic Development of Australia, “40% of the current jobs in Australia will not exist in next 10 to 15 years due to automation.”

A report by McKinsey identified that “currently demonstrated technologies could automate 45 percent of the activities people are paid to perform and that about 60 percent of all occupations could see 30 percent or more of their constituent activities automated, again with technologies available today.”

Amazon USA now uses more than 40,000 robots to move products around its enormous warehouses.

There is no denial that technology is shaping our work.

Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Automation, Virtual Reality and Internet of Things are some of the transformative technologies of our time.

The world has seen industrial revolution previously; however, the present technological revolution is vastly different in magnitude and speed.

The impact will not be limited to blue collar jobs, but some white collar professions will also be impacted.

Australian labour market has so far adjusted to the changing landscape. However, the policy makers will have to catch-up with technological advancement.

I believe the biggest challenge for the government is to design and implement policies that ensure the benefits are equally distributed amongst all; not only to those who are highly skilled.

I believe following four skills will still be relevant in the age of technological disruption:

Communication Skills:

Communication is a broader concept that includes presentation, public speaking and idea pitching skills.

Artificial Intelligence is still not developed enough that synthesizes various concepts and work through complex communication; human beings can.

From my experience of working with skilled migrants for over seven years, I have concluded that Australian employers and recruiters recognise technical skills; however, migrants are not known for their communication prowess.

One of the easiest way to enhance communication skills is through Toastmasters Club.

Problem-solving Skills:

It is an ability to spot problems, within and outside organisation, rapidly and formulate solutions.

I believe each one of us is an entrepreneur – someone who perpetually thinks about solving challenges. People who are known for solving a specific problem will always be in demand.

Digital Literacy:

Embrace the technology – period! If your profession is undergoing changes, learn the new and upcoming technologies. Don’t be complicit.

Relationship Building Skills:

One of the most ignored skill. I am a big proponent of being an active member of professional community – your industry association. Attend networking events, join committee, take-on leadership, seize opportunity to deliver presentation/seminar and build your thought-leadership.
