Indian community in Melbourne has come forward to help hit-and-run victim Jimmy Kalia who is fighting for his life.

37-year-old Indian Australian Jimmy Kalia was struck by a car in Melbourne’s West on Saturday night.

He was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital with critical injuries. The victim has suffered damage to his internal organs and the spine.

He is in an induced coma where doctors performed a surgery on him on Tuesday and one more is scheduled on Thursday.

Mr Kalia’s wife Bindu was present at a press conference held by Victoria Police on Tuesday where she urged the driver of the car that hit her husband to come forward.

While she stays by her husband’s side at the hospital, their two kids are being cared for by her sister in Melbourne.

Rekha Kumar, a friend of the family told SBS Hindi, “Bindu is a very simple lady. She has no one here. She doesn’t even know how to drive and uses public transport to come and go to the hospital.”

"Their two kids are with her sister," she said.

The Indian community in Melbourne has now come forward to raise funds and help the family.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up on the crowdfunding website to raise $100k for Mr Kalia’s treatment.

Member of the Indian community in Melbourne, Sudhir Juneja said, “As a community, it is our duty to help others in need. It could happen to anyone of us.”

Community leader, Mr Jasvinder Sidhu said, "Jimmy may not be able to work for a very long time and he would need his wife to care for him. So they would face financial hardship for a long time.

"My appeal to community members is to come forward and support family of Jimmy Kalia. A fundraising page has been setup."

Meanwhile, the Police have appealed to the driver of the vehicle that hit Jimmy, which police believe is a silver colour Camry or an Aurion, to come and speak to the police.

“We want to find out why this has occurred. And, if there’s a logical explanation for what has gone on, come and talk to us,” said Det Insp Gerard Clanchy.

“This isn’t about a witch hunt, this is about finding out facts. Because there’s a wife and the children who are praying for their father.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at
