Manpreet Vohra appointed India's new High Commissioner to Australia

India's new High Commissioner to Australia, Manpreet Vohra, brings with him extensive experience in diplomacy and strategy. His appointment comes at a time when Australia and India are reconfiguring their relationship as comprehensive strategic partners against the backdrop of worsening relations with China.

Currently serving as India's ambassador to Mexico, Manpreet Vohra will soon take over as India's next High Commissioner to Australia from incumbent Gitesh Sarma.

Mr Vohra's appointment comes at a time when Australia and India are strengthening their ties with each other more than ever before, and forging greater cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, largely dictated by the change their respective relationship with China. 

India's Ministry of External Affairs announced his appointment on 1 March. 

Soon after his new posting was announced, Mr Vohra tweeted that while he will miss Mexico, he is looking forward to the new assignment awaiting him in Canberra.
Mr. Vohra is from the 1988 batch of the Indian Foreign Service. A career diplomat, he has held important assignments as India's Ambassador to Afghanistan and Deputy High Commissioner in Pakistan amongst others.
