The new Labor government headed by Premier Mark McGowan was sworn in on Friday by West Australia’s governor Kerry Sanderson.

Mr McGowan, who led his party to win 41 seats of the 59-seat parliament, admitted his celebrations were short-lived as his focus turned to the job ahead.

"There's so many issues to resolved," he said.

Within hours of swearing in as state’s premier, he wrote to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in a bid to reduce migrant intake in Western Australia, reports.

Removing Perth from the migration scheme was one of the promises he made during his election campaign.

This request is limited to Perth and not regional Western Australia.
Mr McGowan also has commenced a review of state’s skilled occupation list.

As per , he has commenced a review of state’s list of occupations which determines the intake of skilled foreign workers. He has promised extensive cutbacks to this list, by taking off number of professions from the list.

"Obviously we need skilled doctors, we need haematologists, we even need pastry chefs," Mr McGowan .

"But some of those other occupations obviously should be removed.

"This is about putting West Australian jobs first, it is about making sure West Australians get the opportunities for jobs in our state."
