What started as a happy reunion for Vikram Mahal’s family based in Melbourne soon turned sour after his father visiting from India suffered a massive brain stroke on the night of 27th March.

The stroke has left Mr Mahal’s otherwise healthy father, Jaswant Singh immobile and paralyzed on one side.

The 64-year-old who had come to Australia in January to spend time with his son is now battling for his life at the Broadmeadows Hospital.

In the absence of insurance cover and the prospect of a hefty hospital bill of nearly $100,000, the Mahal family has turned to the community for help.

With the help of a few friends, Mr Mahal started an online fundraiser for his father’s treatment which has already managed to raise over $50,000 in less than a week.

Mr Mahal told SBS Punjabi that the doctors have managed to get his father’s sugar levels under control, but he is still suffering from the after-effects of the massive stroke.

Reflecting on his experience, Mr Mahal has this advice for fellow Indians who have aged parents.
“With this experience I'll request all of you to please make sure you must get your visiting parents two insurances before booking their travel. Get both Travel and Overseas visitor health cover for them, because I don’t want anyone to go through what I am facing.”- Vikram Mahal
“I would never be able to repay the debt of the community. I have immense gratitude for all those who have supported me through these hard times”, added an emotional Mr Mahal.
