Manish and his wife Arti (names changed) had all their jewelry and cash stolen last Monday from their Tarneit home.
The burglar who broke into their home, entered the premises by jumping the side fence and made away with expensive ornaments, cash worth a thousand dollars which included Australian and Indian currency, and electronic items.
“When I entered my home at around 6 in the evening, everything looked just ok apart from a few things that were moved a little bit. But when we looked into our master bedroom, it was all disheveled. All our wallets were and drawers were opened.. all our jewelry was gone,” said Manish.
The police attended the scene and the burglary unit took the fingerprints and other forensic evidence the next morning.
Both Manish and Arti have jobs and have to be away from home all day.
But they are now nervous about every time they have to leave their home unattended.
“We had no security camera or break-in alarm installed. But even though we have the security equipment installed at our home, we are still nervous every time we have to leave.”
Karhik Arasu, a local community member who visited the family said people should get insurance of their expensive jewelry.
Several families have fallen prey to violent home invasions, aggravated burglaries and carjackings in the recent days in weeks in Melbourne. Several residents have reportedly armed themselves with sticks and baseball bats and are patrolling their neighborhoods.
However, Victoria Police have expressed concerns about residents confronting offenders as this can lead to physical harm.
