A 21-year-old Indian man has died in a drowning incident.

In a drowning incident, an Indian man has died in West Auckland on Friday 1st December 2017.

According to , the 21-year-old man, Akhil Tangri was found dead at Maori Bay near Muriwai in West Auckland on Friday, the 1st of December.

It has been reported that police were notified of a person in trouble in the water around 3:35 pm on Friday and when emergency services responded, Mr Tangri was found dead.

It is said that Akhil Tangri hailed from Ludhiana in the state of Punjab, India, and had come to New Zealand as a student in July this year.

Mr Tangri was out with two of his friends to celebrate one of the boy’s birthdays when, after playing paintball, they decided to go to Muriwai beach for a swim. While swimming, all of them were swept away by a high tide. While two of them survived, Mr Tangri got caught in the wave and drowned.

Consulate of India in Auckland and the Indian High Commission in Wellington are in touch with the Police and the concerning authorities to assist the family and friends of the deceased.
