Kuldeep Kaur has witnessed politics from the outside, but now she wants to be a voice for the Indian community from inside the chambers of the Victorian Parliament.
34-year-old Kaur is Liberal Party’s candidate for the Upper House from South Eastern Metropolitan region of Melbourne.
“I want to contribute to my community and want to take this opportunity to make a difference in their daily lives,” Ms Kaur told SBS Punjabi.
A nurse by profession, Ms Kaur claims she is passionate about establishing safe and affordable living conditions for the Indian migrants and boosting community engagement in the south eastern region.

“If elected , my focus will be on empowering women, supporting families, resolving problems in local , helping migrants to settle and increase community engagement and involvement via cultural , social and sports activities ,” adds Ms Kaur.
Besides her experience in the hospitality sector, Ms Kaur is a member of White Ribbons which fights to end violence against women and AMES Australia which provides settlement support to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
She has been organising and hosting multicultural events across Melbourne- a platform which she claims gave her the resolve to enter public life.
Ms Kaur feels strongly against safe school programs and drug injecting rooms and believes they are not “safe for our kids or future generations.”

She sees the need of expanding the public transport network to reduce traffic congestion on roads, boosting safety measures and reducing cost of living as three main issues that need to be addressed in the area.
But reiterates that issues concerning the community would remain on top of her agenda, once elected.
“Our community is growing day by day in Australia and we want to keep our heritage, religious and cultural values alive and want to pass on to ours next generation,” says Ms Kaur.
“There are always feedback, complaints and suggestions from community to work on particular topics and areas and my priority will be to resolve those.”
