Do you help to look after an elderly or sick family member? Are you also working part time, full time or casual outside of this responsibility? Or do you expect to be in this "Carer's" role in future?  There are some of the questions that need an answer from an expert.

Gagan Kaur Cheema, Bilingual Health Educator of Multicultural Centre for Women's Health (MCWH) spoke about a project called Dealing With It Myself, which is aimed at supporting communities to understand various support services that are available in Australia if they are playing a role of "Carer" or "Working Carer" at home, while also working to earn a living.

The Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health (MCWH) has launched a project to support women and men who are working at the same time as helping to look after an elderly or ill relative. The project is called ‘Dealing with it myself’.

“As part of the project, we have run sessions in several communities including the Punjabi community in Victoria to raise awareness of what the term "Carer" means in Australian context, and how carers can access support to make their lives easier, said Dr Cheema.

“We are currently seeking groups of men and women to participate in our community education. We are funded to facilitate health education sessions for City of Monash, specifically for Indian, Punjabi, and Tamil speaking communities (more precisely suburbs of Burwood, Ashwood, Chadstone, Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Oakley, Oakley East and South, Clayton, Hughesdale, Mulgrave, Nothing Hill and Wheelers Hill).”

“Please contact us if you would like to book a free session in your own language, where we will provide you with very useful information about how to access services, financial support, and home help, and how to look after yourself better while being in a Carer's role.
