Nicolai Michoutouchkine (5 October 1929 – 2 May 2010), was a painter, artist, designer, and collector of Pacific artefacts. He lived in Vanuatu and with his partner Aloi Pilioko was co-founder of the Michoutouchkine-Pilioko Foundation and the Museum of Oceanic Art based in Port Vila . For all his life Nicolai was proud of his Russian heritage, he was born in France to White Russian parents and left his home town Belfort in 1947 to study painting. We spoke to him on a number of occasions and he shared with us many of his incredible life experiences. For example the story of Michoutouchkine-Pilioko collection travel exhibition in USSR, organised under the patronage of the Academy of Sciences and the Ministry o Culture and from 1979 to 1987 visiting many cities. Nicolai Michoutouchkine was a true follower of the legacy of Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay who was an admirer of the indigenous cultures of Pacific Islands.
