At least 21 people have been killed and more than 30 injured as a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims fell into a gorge in Indian Kashmir, officials said.

The background: The bus began its journey in Kurukshetra in the northern Haryana state and was headed to a Hindu temple in Jammu when it rolled into a deep gorge, a police spokesperson said.

Locals alleged that the bus was heavily overloaded.

What else to know: Road accidents in India are common due to the poor condition of the roads, the poor condition of some vehicles and the traffic rules not being followed.

In 2022, 168,491 people were killed in India and more than 443,366 were injured in some 461,312 road accidents, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Highway and Highway Transport.

What happens next: At least 60 injured people were also admitted to the government medical college in Jammu for treatment, according to the Reuters news agency.

A police official said that a rescue operation is ongoing.
