US President Donald Trump says his planned wall along the Mexican border will be "a very effective weapon against drugs and crime".

In his first speech to a joint session of Congress, he described an "environment of lawless chaos" and called for a restoration of "integrity and the rule of law" at US borders.

"For that reason, we will soon begin the construction of a great wall along our southern border," Trump said on Tuesday night.

Trump said the nation wanted "all Americans to succeed" but it could not happen "in an environment of lawless chaos".

He said the US needed to restore the "rule of law" to its borders.

Trump said the wall would be an "effective weapon against drugs and crime".

He said his administration was removing gang members, drug dealers and criminals from the US.

Trump said "bad ones" were going out as he spoke.
