Donald Trump's inauguration: What to expect on the day

Hundreds of thousands of jubilant Americans – and many angry protesters – are expected to gather at the National Mall in Washington D.C. this Friday to witness Donald Trump sworn in as the 45th President of the United States.

This Friday, Washington D.C. will play host to a day of celebration and protest as Donald Trump is sworn in as President of the United States.

Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony will begin at 9.30am (1.30am AEDT), though Trump isn't expected to take the oath of office until noon (4.00am AEDT).

The ceremony will , with a number of lawmakers boycotting the event, but defeated rival Hillary Clinton and former president Bill Clinton have committed to attend.
The event will be broadcast live in Australia on Saturday morning from 3:30am AEDT on SBS.

Here's a timeline of the events:

1:30am - The official inauguration ceremony begins at the National Mall outside the steps of Congress. An expected crowd of 850,000 will be entertained by performers until the official party arrives.

2:30am - The President-elect will head to the White House for a traditional meeting with the President, before the pair head to the steps of Congress together.

3:30am - Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court John Roberts will deliver opening remarks at the ceremony.

3:45am - Indiana Governor Mike Pence will take the oath of office for the position of Vice President, administered by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. 

4:00am - Donald Trump will take the oath of office, administered by Cheif Justice Roberts.

4:10am - Donald Trump will deliver his Inaugural address, expected to last 20 minutes. 

5:00am The former president and vice president will be escorted from the ceremony by their newly minted replacements.

5:30am - An Inaugural Luncheon will be held in the Capitol building.

6:30am - President Trump and Vice President Pence will lead the Inaugural Parade from the Capitol building to the White House.
