A man has been arrested while allegedly trying to leave hotel quarantine in Melbourne as Victoria marks another day without any community transmission of COVID-19.

The man arrived in Melbourne on 21 December after visiting Sydney and was placed in hotel quarantine for 14 days.

Police say the 24-year-old was nabbed in front of a quarantine hotel in Tullamarine, after he left his room without permission about 2.45pm on Boxing Day.

He was returned to his room without further incident and police are investigating.

Breaching quarantine can attract more than $19,000 in fines.
Meanwhile, the state marked 58 straight days with zero community transmission cases on Sunday, recording just one new coronavirus case in a returned international traveller in hotel quarantine.

There are currently 10 active COVID-19 cases in Victoria, with nine of them in hotel quarantine and the tenth a teenage girl who is isolating at home after catching the virus in NSW.

“There has been an excellent response to our call for testing over the past week with higher than expected numbers of people getting tested, but we must remain vigilant over the festive season and anyone with symptoms is urged to get tested immediately,” a media release from Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said on Sunday.
While hours have been reduced at some testing sites until 2 January, the health department says more than 60 remain open throughout the summer break - including sites in the popular holiday destinations Torquay, Lorne and the Mornington Peninsula.

Victoria’s border with NSW remains closed. Those who have been in the Northern Beaches area, Greater Sydney or the NSW Central Coast from 11 December are banned from entering the state.
