Pre-publication government censorship has been abolished and daily independent newspapers will be allowed in April.
Independent media groups that spent years operating illegally and in exile are now opening offices inside the country.
Indonesia correspondent Rebecca Henschke has been working in Myanmar helping its media adjust to the new era by training journalists for the Democratic Voice of Burma, who were once imprisoned for their reporting.
She's described to Murray Silby how those journalists feel about the process they're going through.
