On-air rescue: Reporter saves truck driver in Houston floods

A quick-thinking Houston TV crew has helped save a stranded truck driver trapped in the Hurricane Harvey floods.

Despite most of the KHOU 11 team being evacuated due to "unprecedented" floods, Brandi Smith was reporting live in north Houston with her photographer Mario when she noticed a truck driver trapped in rising waters.

Smith reacted quickly and waved down a Harris County sheriff's department vehicle which had a rescue boat in tow.

After Smith spoke to the officials a rescue boat was deployed and she said the driver was successfully saved.

"The  signal cut out just as Harris County Sheriff's Office crews got their rescue boat in the water to pull a semi driver out of his flooded cab," Smith wrote on Facebook.

"I've had SO many people asking if he made it out OK and I wanted to share the video. (We kept going and rolling until the camera's battery died, not knowing we'd been knocked off the air.) THANK GOD for that crew."

The video has more than 1.5 million views on Facebook and social media has praised the efforts of Smith, Mario and the Sherrif County Department.

Hurricane Harvey has devastated Texas, with Houston airports and roads shut-off due to "unprecedented" flooding.

At least seven people have been killed so far in the hurricane and US President Donald Trump is expected to visit the state on Wednesday.
