Republican health care bill dead for now

Two more Republican senators have refused to back the party's health care legislation, effectively killing off a second attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare.

The latest attempt by US Republicans to repeal and replace Obamacare has been fatally wounded in the Senate with two more GOP senators announcing their opposition to the legislation strongly backed by President Donald Trump.

The announcements from Senators Mike Lee of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas left the Republican Party's long-promised efforts to get rid of President Barack Obama's health care legislation reeling. Next steps, if any, were not immediately clear.

Lee and Moran both said they could not support Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's legislation in its current form. They joined GOP Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Rand Paul of Kentucky, both of whom announced their opposition right after McConnell released the bill last Thursday.

It's the second straight failure for McConnell, who had to cancel a vote on an earlier version of the bill last month when defeat became inevitable.

President Donald Trump called for Republicans to repeal the nation's current health care law and start from a clean slate.

"Republicans should just REPEAL failing ObamaCare now & work on a new Healthcare Plan that will start from a clean slate. Dems will join in!" he tweeted.
