President Joe Biden has called for a lowering of the temperature in U-S politics following the failed assassination attempt in Donald Trump.

In an address to the nation, Mr Biden has appealed to Americans not to resort to violence.

"Lower the temperature in our politics and to remember, we may disagree, we're not enemies. We're neighbours, we're friends, co-workers, citizens and most importantly we are fellow Americans. We must stand together."

The Secret Service says it's confident in the security plans for the Republican National Convention after the attack at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania.

The event will take place in Milwaukee where Donald Trump is likely to be confirmed as the Republican candidate for the November presidential election.

As investigations continue into the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, the Secret Service has provided a briefing on the security measures that are in place for the convention.

The agency's co-ordinator for the event, Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, says the Secret Service has a comprehensive security plan in place.

"We will continue to assess the security environment and adapt our security measures as appropriate. The Secret Service is working diligently with the Milwaukee Police Department, as well as all of our federal, state and local partners to ensure a safe and secure convention for attendees, volunteers, and the City of Milwaukee.”

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says violence against political figures should not be normalised.

The treasurer wants to ensure people across the political spectrum can disagree in peaceful, non-violent ways.

He says Australians are concerned about the divisive nature of politics.

"Unfortunately, what we saw in Pennsylvania was the ugliness of our politics, taken to its most extreme and deadly conclusion. And we don't want to see that become the norm in societies around the world. You know, I think really in the last 24 hours or so, but for a longer period as well. Australians have been concerned about the ugliness of our politics, the divisiveness of it, the polarisation in quite extreme ways, and we've got an opportunity here to take a step back from that, and we should take it."

The Victorian branch of the CFMEU has been placed into administration following allegations of criminal behaviour and links with bikie gangs within the union.

Members of the union held an emergency meeting [[Monday]] following claims members of outlaw motorcycle gangs were acting as CFMEU delegates and links between construction projects and organised crime groups.

The union's national secretary Zach Smith says the national office will assume senior executive powers and an independent process set up to investigate criminal allegations.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the news saying the union needs to clean up its act.

The head of the Victorian branch of the CFMEU John Setka quit on Friday night but not before describing the reports as "false accusations" and "malicious attacks".

ACTU National Secretary Sally McManus says she and her union colleagues are appalled by the alleged criminal activity.

"I am and all of my colleagues are shocked and horrified by what we have seen. We have not known about this. We do not tolerate any criminal activity and we expect that the CFMEU take all steps necessary to rid themselves of it."

Officials in Gaza say at least 13 people have been killed and more than 70 injured in an Israeli air strike on a United Nations-run school in a refugee camp in the centre of the Gaza Strip.

The attack targeted the school in the Nuseirat refugee camp where hundreds of displaced people had sought refuge.

Israeli officials claim the building was targeted because militants were operating at the school.

Videos broadcast on Palestinian channels shows hundreds of people running through the schoolyard, some carrying wounded individuals, while dozens of civilians dug through the rubble to rescue those trapped, including children.

Buckingham Palace says King Charles and Queen Camilla are set to visit Australia and Samoa in October.

The Australian leg of the trip will see the royal couple carry out engagements in the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales.

King Charles is undergoing cancer treatment and doctors have advised him against any further extension of the trip, so New Zealand will miss out on a royal visit.
