A 23-year-old Aboriginal man is in a serious but stable condition in Royal Adelaide Hospital after being hit by a police vehicle on an Alice Springs' street overnight.
In a statement, Northern Territory Police said they responded to reports of an armed person at around 8.20pm in the inner-suburb of Araluen.
The man was hit by a police vehicle on Nicker Crescent in the suburb of Gillen, a three-minute drive away.
"Vehicles attended and in the process of attempting to apprehend the man there was a collision with the man and one of the vehicles," a statement from NT Police reads.
"Police administered first aid until St Johns Ambulance arrived and transported the man to hospital."
South Australia Health has confirmed the man was serious but stable just after midday local time on Tuesday.
A witness to the crash told NT News the man was unresponsive after he was struck and rushed to hospital.
NT Police said the matter, which is being treated as a "serious custody incident", is being investigated.
The incident comes just over a week after the fatal shooting of Kumanjayi Walker by a NT police officer in Yuendumu, a town located around 300 kiliometres north-west of Alice Springs.
