Northern Territory Police have confirmed they are responding to "a critical incident" involving the shooting of a Warlpiri man in the central desert community of Yuendumu, around 4.5 hours north-west of Alice Springs on Saturday night.

According to the NT Police Facebook page the man is in a critical condition and is receiving medical attention.

NITV News has heard reports from community members that a shooting occurred around 7pm local time on Saturday night.

Community members say several police were involved in the incident.

A source close to the family of the victim said that it was “mongrel behaviour” on behalf of the NT Police.

“The community is terrified. They’re very very angry. The police are not cooperating with the family or community leaders," the source told NITV News.

More to come.
