Constitutional recognition referendum report due in mid-2016

A new council will report by mid-2016 on steps towards a referendum to recognise Indigenous people in the constitution.

The referendum council met for the first time in Sydney on Monday to discuss how to build broad community support for the national vote.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull addressed the inaugural meeting of the Referendum Council on constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

A series of indigenous-led consultations are to be held in coming months.
