The NRL match review committee has been given extra time to discover how Sharks prop Andrew Fifita was injured in Sunday's match against the Knights.
The Wiradjuri and Tongan man is in an induced coma after copping a severe hit to the throat in last minute of the game's first half.
The 32-year-old's family have met with doctors and specialists to discuss the next course of action, believed to involve surgery.
It will bring an end to the star's season after just six games, and also casts a shadow over his future career.
His club released a statement after the game, addressing fans obvious concerns after seeing Fifita leave the field.
“After the match Andrew reported difficulty swallowing,” the statement said. “He was also noted to have a hoarse voice at this time and his care was escalated to the paramedics with a suspected laryngeal injury.
“He was taken via ambulance to hospital, where a significant laryngeal injury was confirmed. Andrew remains in hospital, where he is receiving the best possible care.”
The NRL meanwhile has said that they are investigating all video footage of the incident before closing the book on the match at 10am on Tuesday.
“Due to Sunday’s fixtures being held at a non-standard venue and subsequently all available angles of incidents not being available to the NRL immediately following the match as would normally be the case, the judiciary chairman has allowed an extension until 10am tomorrow to complete the match review process,” the statement said.
