Musical instruments and priceless family mementos were among the possessions singer-songwriter Emily Wurramara lost after she and other residents of a Brisbane unit block woke up to cries of 'fire, fire get out' two weeks ago.
The blaze began in the eight-unit block, spread quickly to the commercial building next door and blanketed the inner city in thick clouds of grey smoke. It took more than 30 firefighters to bring the flames under control.
Ms Wurramarra and her daughter escaped unharmed and, like many of the other residents, lost practically all their possessions.
The next day she began organising a fundraising concert.
Ricky Pascoe, Luke Daniel Peacock and Jarulah Slabb are among the acts performing tonight at 'Rising Phoenix' event in Brisbane.
Queensland Deputy Premier Jackie Trad and Ms Wurramarra be will hosting.
The concert is free and all money raised will go towards the tenants who were affected by the fire.
“Music is such a universal language, it heals people, it brings people together from all nations, from all colours, from all religions together,” Ms Wurramarra told NITV.
“It kind of breaks your spirit a little bit when you have nothing.”
“I’ve lost everything, but that’s ok I’ve just been really blessed that everyone got out and for me, it’s important to see community to come together.”
