NT Police say the car appears to have rolled at high-speed before hitting trees about 60km west of Jabiru on Monday morning.

Five men from the remote Aboriginal community of Gunbalanya in West Arnhem Land have died in a single-vehicle crash in Kakadu National Park yesterday.

Northern Territory Police Commander, Matthew Hollamby, said the vehicle was travelling in a westerly direction at “high-speed” before the crash occurred.

“It drifted off the road, over-corrected, rolled and struck a tree,” said Mr Hollamby.

“All five occupants of the vehicle were killed and it appears all five were wearing seatbelts.”

So far, NT police have identified three of the men in the vehicle and are still waiting the formal identification of the other two.

None of the men were under the age of 18, said police.

Mr Hollamby said he couldn’t remember the last time there was a fatal crash in the Northern Territory that “involved five fatalities.”

“All fatal crashes are bad, but this one cost five lives,” he said.

A post on the Northern Land Council Facebook page on Tuesday said the Gunbalanya community was closed to visitors, tour groups and media due to Sorry Business.

However, essential services, support services and family would be allowed to enter.

NT Police said the welfare group, Territory Families, will provide support to the families of the men and the wider community.
