An Aboriginal man has been shot dead by NSW police, after what authorities called a 'physical confrontation' at a Sydney home.

NITV News has spoken to a relative who confirmed he was a Gomeroi man, who has also called for an urgent independent investigation.

Blacktown Police attended the property in Seven Hills in Sydney's north-west in connection to an outstanding warrant on Tuesday morning at around 11:20am.

Authorities told reporters at a press conference that the 45-year-old man was armed with an axe and a knife, and attending officers fired their weapons in response.

The man collapsed, and police officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but the man was unable to be revived.

A crime scene has been established and investigations are underway.

NSW police said several residential streets have been closed and diversions are in place.

NSW Greens MP David Shoebridge wrote on social media that his office had spoken to the family of the man and noted the incident comes just a day after man died in custody in Cessnock prison.

Independent investigation launched

The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission have been notified and will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.

In a statement it said the incident is being reviewed by the New South Wales' Professional Standards Command and a probe is now underway.

“The LECC is independently monitoring the investigation of the critical incident under Part 8 of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission Act 2016 to ensure public confidence in the investigation,” the commission said in a statement.
