NSW Police has uncovered unidentified remains in Northern New South Wales, where an intensive search has been underway for a missing Aboriginal man.

The family of the 22-year-old Gomeroi man made mammoth efforts in their search along the Gwydir River, after he disappeared in the early hours of Saturday July 10 following an interaction with police.

New South Wales western region police said in a statement to NITV News that New England officers commenced a three-day search involving divers, dogs and marine police and rescue scouring the dense bushland and scrub near the river.

Police divers located the remains in the Gwydir River near Billa Street in Yarraman, about 500 metres from where he was reportedly last seen.

NITV News is choosing not to identify the man or publish any images of him until appropriate family permissions are obtained.
