A 73-year-old man has been charged with the alleged murder of Christine Neilan, who was found nearly two years ago in outback New South Wales.

NSW Detectives said the man was arrested at a home in Lightning Ridge just after 10am on  Monday.

The 39-year-old mother and grandmother went for a walk in Lightning Ridge, located in north-western New South Wales, in January 2020.

It was the last time she was seen alive.

Ms Neilan's body was found on 9 January, 2020 after emergency services were called to bushland scrub near Sunflash Street and Black Prince Drive in the opal mining town.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and Central North Police District established Strike Force Bullarook to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

The Lightning Ridge man faced Walgett Local Court on Tuesday morning.
