Victoria Police's Homicide Squad have charged a man with one count of negligent manslaughter on Thursday in the latest development following the death of 20-year-old Jesse Edwards last year.

Mr Edwards had been out with family and friends when he was allegedly caught up in a brawl in Campbell Street, Swan Hill in January 2019.

He died before the ambulance arrived to take him to a hospital, with the circumstances around his death remaining a mystery.

On Thursday, 57-year-old Steven Bartalotta faced Swan Hill Magistrates' Court on charges relating to the death.

According to government documents, Mr Bartalotta was the owner of Barrell's Niteclub at the time, just metres from where the incident occurred.

He has been released on bail, and will face Mildura Court for a committal hearing on October 27.

In October 2019, three men aged 22 to 45 were charged by Victoria Police for offences ranging from common law assault to affray in relation to the incident.
