39-year-old Christine Neilan lived in Lightning Ridge with her mother and was known to walk around the local area with her small white dog ‘Sooky’.

Following the discovery of her body last week, NSW Police are appealing to the public for help in what they have labelled a 'suspicious death'.

NSW Police said Ms Neilan was last seen leaving her home without her dog around 10am on Wednesday January 8.

They said she was wearing an orange and blue short-sleeved shirt with an Indigenous pattern and black shorts.

The body of Ms Neilan was found in bushland in Lightning Ridge on January 9, with a post mortem revealing the 39-year-old died from serious head injuries.

Strike Force Bullarook has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ms Neilan's death.

“Police are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who had contact with or saw Christine in the 24 hours before her body was located,” Homicide Squad Commander Danny Doherty said.

“We urge any member of the community who may be able to assist detectives with their investigation to come forward and help us provide answers for Christine’s family."
