Police are investigating a hit and run involving a 20-year-old Indigenous man near Port Augusta on the weekend.
Police and paramedics were called to the Augusta Highway at Stirling North after a man was found lying by the side of the road at around 6.30pm on Sunday night.
The 20-year-old local man, Isiah Johnstone Hodshon, was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Monday, NITV News spoke briefly with Mr Hodshon's mother, Leticia Hewett, who called for the driver to hand himself in.
"I’d love for the driver to come forward if they haven’t already," said Ms Hewett.
"There needs to be a footpath put in that area so no other family has to deal with this."
South Australia police said the driver may not be aware they have hit and killed someone.
"They may not know that they were involved in the crash, but if they had any sort of interaction or incident occur there, they're urged to come forward," said senior constable Rebecca Stokes.
"As well as anyone who may been driving on the Augusta Highway who may have dashcam or remember seeing this pedestrian around 6:00pm–6:30pm — they can also be very helpful to the investigation."
The mayor of Port Augusta, Brett Benbow, has paid tribute to the deceased young man.
"The impact on the community is a major impact you know, we're looking at a young life with a lot of time ahead of him," said Mr Benbow.
SA police Major Crash Investigators attended and examined the scene overnight.
They believe the young man was walking south along the Augusta Highway when he was struck by a vehicle, also travelling south.
Police are appealing for the driver of that vehicle to come forward.
