Shane Stone will do 'everything in his power' to block Giles federal run

As Adam Giles faces a potential defeat in his Alice Springs electorate, former NT Liberal leader Shane Stone says he will block any attempt at a run for the federal Senate.

Outgoing Chief Minister Adam Giles is facing the prospect of losing his own seat in the NT parliament, trailing Labor's Dale Wakefield in the seat of Braitling by 21 votes on Monday morning.

Mr Giles is already talking about his political future and could be a contender to replace NT Country Liberal Party senator Nigel Scullion, who has been in federal parliament since 2001.

But Shane Stone, who is also a former NT chief minister, told ABC radio he would work to prevent Giles' pre-selection.

"If he ... puts his hand up for the Senate, I will do everything within my power to defeat his pre-selection," Mr Stone told ABC radio on Monday.

Mr Stone said the Liberals' decline in the Territory began when Giles led a successful leadership coup against Terry Miles in the government's first year.

It was a "disgraceful act of treachery", he said.
