Rapper The Kid LAROI has made an appearance on the cover of Vogue Australia just a week ahead of the 64th annual GRAMMYs.
The Oscars of the music industry will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 4, AEST.
The cover and interview of the teenaged sensation could be the prelude to another gong, as LAROI is up for the prestigious Best New Artist GRAMMY.
It's a far cry from his early life, which the rapper, born Charlton Howard, says was far from easy.
"It got to a point where we had nowhere to go," he told the magazine of moving house often.
"We were staying on my mum’s friend’s couch. So music was definitely a way of keeping my head clear.”
LAROI, who says he based his name on a Kamilaroi heritage, has seen a stratospheric rise to fame in the last 18 months. The GRAMMY nomination is a capstone to innumerable achievements in that time.
The young rapper said his trajectory has been one based on lots of luck, and that he has relied on friend and collaborator Justin Bieber to provide guidance on navigating the pitfalls of fame.
"I’m always trying to get some knowledge out of him and he loves it when I ask lots of questions.
"I’m always super grateful that I have somebody like him who has been through what I’m going through—times 10.”
Powerhouse Yorta Yorta rapper Briggs, speaking to Vogue Australia, said the nomination is only fitting, and that a similar respect from local organisations is conspicuously missing.
"I’ve seen him work in the studio once or twice, and he’s prolific as f*ck," he said.
"There’s no secret, he just oozes talent. The fact that they haven’t given him every f*cking ARIA is bananas to me.”
The 19-year-old's appearance in the cover follows that of First Nations model Magnolia Maymuru from last year.
The Yolngu woman and her daughter Djarraran appeared on the cover of the August 2021 edition.
