Price, who claimed victory in the motorbike class at the 2016 and 2019 Dakar Rally, returns with the KTM Factory team as he attempts to claim his third title when the race gets underway on Sunday, January 3.

The 12-stage race starts and finishes in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah and covers some of the most treacherous desert terrain in the Middle East.

Motorcycles, cars, quads and trucks traverse dunes, mud, grass, rocks and more in an effort to complete each stage with just finishing the race a major achievement for most competitors.
The 2021 edition will be held in Saudi Arabia for the second time and remains a must-see race for motorsport fans, with SBS also set to showcase additional content on Aussies, classic cars and women competing in the event.

Fellow Aussie and Price's KTM Factory teammate Daniel Sanders will line up for his first-ever Dakar this year and will be hoping to make his debut one to remember.

Also making their maiden entry in this year's Dakar is Australians Michael Burgess and Andrew Houlihan who are riding privateer KTM motorbikes.

Sanders could prove to be a major surprise packet in his debut race after he finished third in Saturday's prologue race only 13 seconds behind 2020 Dakar winner Ricky Brabec.

Although only 22 seconds off the pace, Price finished the day in ninth place.

"Prologue done. I'm in a good spot, situated roughly where I wanted to be so we are well and truly underway for #Dakar2021 and I'm excited for the days ahead," Price posted on Twitter.

"We'll wait and see what the Rally brings us but ready for the race."

Burgess was 39th in the prologue race, one minute and 19 seconds off the leader, while Andrew Houlihan finished two minutes and 46 seconds behind first in 72nd position.

The first official stage of the race will see competitors trek 622 kilometres from Jeddah to Bisha with a 277km timed special race section.

While this stage is entirely on-track, the route will pass through several valleys which will require expert roadbook reading skills.

SBS will broadcast extended daily highlights of the 2021 Dakar Rally - available from January 4-16 via SBS On Demand or watch on SBS nightly from 5:30 pm (AEDT).
