Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-DSTNY) got into the crucial breakaway of the day before executing a perfect final sprint to win his first-ever stage at the Tour de France, and his team's first since 2020.

Vercher beat Kwiatkowski in the sprint for second, while Jai Hindley (Red Bull BORA-Hansgrohe) finished eighth on the stage from the group behind to achieve the highest placing for an Australian at the race so far, and countryman Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla) finished tenth for the second time.

“Winning a stage in the Tour de France is everybody’s dream, I’ve been dreaming of this for a very long time," An emotional Campenaerts said post-stage.

"Coming into the Tour de France we had a super motivated team, with a super good atmosphere. This is just the sum of the atmosphere in the team and we’re gonna celebrate tonight.

"The support I’ve had from my girlfriend is incredible, she is always there for me. She is the hero of this story. I’m so grateful to her and to the team, which showed a lot of faith in me and allowed me to stay for nine weeks in altitude without doing any race on the build-up. I’ll be leaving the team this winter, but I’m happy I can finish my spell in the team with the highlight of my career."

Campenaerts will depart Lotto-DSTNY to join Visma Lease-a-Bike in 2025, a deal which was announced last month.
It was a non-event of a stage for the general classification battle, with Tadej Pogacar enjoying a relaxing fifteenth straight day in the yellow jersey as the peloton let the breakaway go over ten minutes up the road.

They'll be front and centre over the next two days with the final two mountain stages of the Tour de France that will see the last opportunities for Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease-a-Bike) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) to make up time on Pogacar in the overall standings.

The Tour de France enters the first of the final two mountains tests tonight, with a 144.6km route taking the riders up and over two hors categorie climbs in the Col de Vars and Cime de la Bonette before a summit finish on the Isola 2000. Watch the action live from 8:05pm (AEST) on SBS On Demand and the Tour Tracker app, before coverage on SBS begins from 8:30pm.
