Richard Carapaz (EF Education EasyPost) made a move from the huge chasing group to catch Simon Yates (Jayco-AlUla) on the slopes of the Col du Noyer, before attacking the Brit and cresting the summit solo, pacing his effort for the remainder of the stage perfectly to take a historic win as Yates took second and Enric Mas (Movistar) took third.
It was a fantastic effort from Carapaz in hot conditions, rewarding him his first ever win at the Tour de France and first ever win by an Ecuadorian at the race. The 2019 Giro d'Italia champion has now also won at least one stage in all three Grand Tours.

"This victory means everything!" Carapaz said post-stage.
"I’ve been trying to get it since the start of the Tour, that was the goal. It was a very difficult day, with a lot of attacks, but in the end, a large group formed, I was able to come out at the right time and I managed to get this result which I will remember forever.
"I really made the most of the moment. I had won stages in the Giro and the Vuelta but the Tour de France is the race with all the best riders in the world."
Despite being eight minutes down on the race for stage honours in front, the top three riders in the overall classification still took the opportunity to attack, with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) again attacking in the yellow jersey, this time on the Col du Noyer.
Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease-a-Bike) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) were initially unable to respond, with Evenepoel briefly distancing his Danish rival while chasing before Vingegaard's teammate Christophe Laporte dropped back to pace him back to Pogacar's wheel.
The three came back together onto the final climb, where this time Evenepoel attacked, gaining 10 seconds on Pogacar and 12 on Vingegaard. Their overall positions remain unchanged, but Evenepoel is now 5 minutes and 9 seconds behind the yellow jersey, while Vingegaard is 3 minutes and 11 seconds back.
Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) was the highest placed Australian on the day, finishing in 51st.
