Caught in the middle of the pack of sprinters as the stage moved into the final few hundred metres, Cavendish used his experience and expertise to create an opening, launching out to the side of the road.
It was a kick too powerful for his opponents to follow, the Manxman winning comfortably ahead of Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) in second and Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X) in third.

The sprint sealed the 35th stage win for Cavendish at the Tour de France, no longer tied with Eddy Merckx on 34 but in his own orbit as the greatest stage winner at cycling's biggest race.
"We didn’t nail it as a team like we wanted to do, but the boys improvised and got me there in the best position," a jubilant Cavendish said after the stage.
"I shot onto whatever train was going and was able to win. Especially when you are not physically as good as everybody else, it’s definitely beneficial to use your head a bit.
"You have to go all in. We’ve done it. We worked on exactly what we wanted to do. How we built the team, what we’ve done with the equipment. Every little detail has been put towards specifically today. You see what it means!"
In his 15th Tour de France, the experience of 39-year old Cavendish shone through, battling through intense heat and sickness in Stage 1 to stay the course and take his chance at victory four days later.
In the other big news of the day, Stage 3 winner Biniam Girmay did enough in the intermediate sprint and the finale to take the lead in the points classification and don the green jersey.
It was a relaxed day for the riders who weren't sprinters, with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) keeping the yellow jersey after finishing safely within the peloton.
Stage 6 of the Tour de France brings another opportunity for the sprinters to fly at the finale, with a flat 163.5km route from Macon to Dijon. Watch tonight from 9:30pm (AEST) on SBS and SBS On Demand.
