With crosswinds causing havoc in the peloton multiple times, a frenetic pace gave way to an intense finish, with a crash in the last kilometre meaning a reduced bunch contested the sprint with Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) fastest to the line ahead of Wout van Aert (Visma Lease-a-Bike) and Pascal Ackermann (Israel-PremierTech).
Fighting for position before the final corner, Maxim van Gils (Lotto-DSTNY) made a move up to the front on the outside at the same time as Amaury Capiot (Arkea B&B Hotels) stopped pedalling and swung off to the side, van Gils nudging Capiot to avoid going into the barriers which caused the latter to hit the deck and bring down several other riders.

Philipsen then took advantage from the smaller group left, surging ahead with a powerful kick in the last 250 metres that delivered him his seventh all-time win at the Tour de France.
"Today I had my best feelings since the start of the Tour," he said after the stage.
"We didn't start in the best way but we’ve turned things around in our favour. But we always want more. We will see day-by-day how far this will take us. In any case, I’m super happy today.”
Despite an animated race where at one point the top three overall were split in the crosswinds from the peloton in a select group, the times went unchanged with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) remaining in the yellow jersey with a 1 minute and 6 second lead over Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and 1 minute and 14 second lead over Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease-a-Bike).
The bottom placings were shaken up by stage's end, after the pre-stage withdrawal of Primoz Roglic (Red Bull BORA-Hansgrohe) and early stage withdrawal of Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates).
Roglic's fourth overall spot is now occupied by Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) while Derek Gee (Israel PremierTech) takes over Ayuso's ninth overall.
