Simmons saga 'moving in positive direction', says Sixers president Morey

Philadelphia 76ers president Daryl Morey believes Ben Simmons could soon re-join his teammates on the court after a positive past few days.

Speaking prior to Philadelphia’s 12-point victory over Oklahoma City on Monday, Morey revealed the 6-foot-10 guard had addressed the team and will be given “all the resources” to help his return.

Morey’s comments will come as quite the surprise to Sixers fans, particularly after suggesting the Simmons saga could stretch on for “four years” last week.

The former first overall pick has dominated off-court discussions since stating his desire to be traded in June, but his latest movements hint a reunion may be on the cards instead.

“Ben came in at the end of last week and said he had back stiffness and he has, he’s dealing with some personal reasons off the court,” Morey told Amy Fadool of NBCSP.

“Both (parties) take (this) very seriously. We’re working with Ben to provide every resource to help him with what is needed.

“And he spoke to his teammates – things seem to be moving very much in a positive direction.

“We’re gonna provide all the resources and get Ben what he needs and get him out there as soon as we can.”
Simmons’ return would undoubtedly improve the Sixers’ set-up, regardless of his well-known weaknesses, with Doc Rivers out to build on a 2-1 start and ultimately avenge last season’s second-round exit from the playoffs.

Though it’s believed the Australian could yet sit out until December 15, the day Sixers brass are able to explore trade options for newly-signed players, Morey’s change of heart means his prized point guard could now stay put.

“We’re taking it day by day getting Ben what he needs,” Morey added.

“He’ll probably be doing individual workouts while he works through this and working through everything that we can help him with, and (we) hope to get him back out there as soon as he’s ready.”

The Philadelphia 76ers take on the Atlanta Hawks this Sunday, October 31 and both SBS VICELAND and SBS On Demand will air all the action LIVE from 10:00am (AEDT).
