A seafood restaurant in China has been criticised for its policy of offering discounts to women based on their bra sizes.

Residents in Hangzhou complained to their local council after the Trendy Shrimp restaurant advertised its breast-based discounts, the reports.

The Trendy Shrimp's posters show a range of scantily-clad cartoon women with the words: "The whole city is looking for BREASTS".

It lists the discounts available for women, from five per cent for women with an A cup to 65 per cent for a G cup.

The posters were first displayed on August 1, but have since been taken down after people complained they were "vulgar advertising" and "discriminatory towards women".

But Trendy Shrimp general manager Lan Shenggang said it had been an effective sales strategy.

"Once promotion started, customer numbers rose by about 20 per cent," he told the paper, as reported by the.

"Some of the girls we met were very proud - they had nothing to hide."

Women who came to the restaurant seeking to take advantage of the discount were able to deal with waitresses rather than male staff, so as to "avoid embarrassment",  he added.

Reaction on social media was mixed, but many tried to see the funny side of it.
