The next Wonder Woman film could see Diana Prince represented as bisexual, with some fans of the franchise rallying for Warner Bros. to recognise the character’s sexuality.
Gianna Collier-Pitts has created a petition addressed to the studio, pointing out that Wonder Woman’s sexuality has always been alluded to in the DC Universe.
“Writer of Wonder Woman: Rebirth Greg Rucka even confirmed that 'Diana has been in love and had relationships with other women', so why is it so hard to translate this for the silver screen?” asks Collier Pitts.
She goes on to say that there is a lack of bisexual characters in popular culture and when they do appear, they’re portrayed in a way that reinforces negative stereotypes.
“We are over-sexualised and underrepresented. We are called greedy, dishonest, and confused.
“We are the least likely to come out and the most likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, on top of experiencing higher rates of sexual/intimate partner violence.
“We are made to feel invisible and in doing so we begin to see ourselves as invisible," she writes.
Collier-Pitts adds that “making Wonder Woman canonically bisexual on the big screen would make her the first openly LGBTQ superhero of any gender from either DC or Marvel's cinematic universes, and would solidify her place as a true role model for women of all ages and identities.”
Wonder Woman access Gal Gadot has on the issue, saying it wasn’t something the film’s writing team had explored yet.
“It never came to the table, but when you talk theoretically about all the women on Themyscira and how many years she was there, then what he said makes sense," she said.
“In this movie she does not experience any bisexual relationships. But it’s not about that. She’s a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts.”
Collier-Pitts has so far received just over 5,000 signatures to her petition, with people commenting on why they were showing their support for the cause.
One person wrote: "I just want people to see that being bi is not a mistake or a mental illness. I want people to see that we can be heroes too."
Another added: “As a bisexual woman, Wonder Woman has been a huge inspiration to me, and I want the chance for her to be an inspiration to all of the little girls like she was for me.”
