Australia is rejoicing after the results of the same-sex marriage postal survey were finally delivered this morning—with 61.1 per cent of eligible voters saying ‘Yes’ to marriage equality.

The announcement has inspired queer couples around the country to pop the question, including activist and Sydney Mardi Gras board member James "Breko" Brechney- who got down on one knee and proposed to his partner, Stu Henshall.

The proposal happened at Sydney's Prince Alfred park just moments after the results were announced.
Hayley Legg decided to propose to her partner Emma Guiney last night—surprising her at the local pub with a group of their closest friends.

“I took Emma on our usual Tuesday night date,” Hayley tells SBS.

“She didn’t know that I had these wonderful ‘Will You Marry Me?’ rainbow signs printed out and got our friends to hold them up.

“Then I led her into the back bistro and she had the shock of her life, I think!”

Hayley decided she wanted to pop the question the night, before the results of the postal survey were made public.

“I knew that it was going to be a special day regardless and I thought, if you just get engaged the night before, we can have a massive celebration regardless of what happens."
Others shared their happy moments on social media, professing their love on the historic day.
