'It's astounding': Janet Mock on directing the finale of 'Pose'

Hollywood trailblazer Janet Mock has spoken of the "astounding" honour of directing the season finale of FX series Pose.

Mock made history by becoming the first trans woman of colour to direct an episode of mainstream television.

"Steven [Canals] and I were having intense conversations with Ryan [Murphy] about making sure that the people directing the episodes represented, in some capacity, an intersection of the identities that were onscreen," she said

“We wanted to make sure that women of color, women, queer people, and trans folk are actually directors, because directors set the tone for everything!”

Having continued on as a director for the groundbreaking series, Mock shared the new season finale trailer this week, writing: "Please gather everyone for this grand finale where Mother of the Year will be crowned...and soooo much more."
Speaking to about the significance of directing the episode, Mock called the experience "astounding and humbling".

"To be trusted with a finale for any director is astounding," she said.

"For me, it’s astounding and it’s humbling and it’s great and it’s astonishing. At the same time, it’s also meaningful and impactful because it’s a story about my community."

The TV heavyweight continued: "This whole process of working on Pose has changed my life and emboldened me as a storyteller and an artist, and I get to keep on telling stories with my deal with Netflix and next season."

Mock is set to go from strength to strength as a director, having recently .

The three-year multimillion-dollar deal gives Netflix exclusive rights to Pose and a first-look option on feature film projects,  

“So proud to join the ranks of digital content moguls as the first trans woman to call her own creative shots at a major content company,” Mock wrote online following the news.
