Singer-songwriter Sam Smith has opened up about the lyrics of their new song Him in an interview with the
The track—from their latest album The Thrill Of It All—describes the story of a young person coming out to their father. Smith says Him is “my version of a hymn”.
“It was important for me to speak about my views on that issue on this album instead of just being about love and relationships. I am a 25 year old with opinions.”
Smith added that they wrote the track in Australia—their home away from home—after a night out at gay bar Stonewall in Darlinghurst.
“I remember being inspired and wanting to write a song called Him and I actually wrote it in the shower.”

The 25-year-old has been a vocal supporter of the Yes campaign in Australia’s marriage law postal survey.
Smith says they feel "so lucky to be making music when I am".
“I know things were so much tougher back in the day, but we’ve still got such a long way to go.
“I still don’t feel like everything is where it should be. We’ll see when I start singing Him in certain parts of the world. I hope people listen and accept, but there’s people who aren’t going to.
"I get homophobic abuse on a daily basis on social media.”
“I mean, I’ve got these tattoos on my fingers,” they told the Sunday Times. “I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man.”
The Thrill Of It All is due for release on Friday November 3.
